The largest solar power plant in South Savo region to be built in Mikkeli, Finland by Helios Nordic Energy

Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy is preparing to implement an industrial-scale solar energy project, which to date, is the largest publicly announced single solar power site in the South Savo region.

The total reserved area covers 267 hectares of which approximately 200 hectares will be designated for the development of the solar power plant. The project site is located on land owned by the City of Mikkeli in the Rapakivensuo area, about 10 kilometres north of the city centre, in the direction of Kangasniemi and Jyväskylä.

The City of Mikkeli has made a decision to reserve the land for Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy for the period of 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2029. This extended reservation period exceeds the standard 18-month reservation due to the project’s scale and location, which require comprehensive environmental assessments and grid connection studies. The city has committed to leasing the land to the operator for a period of 45 years. The final capacity and panel area of the solar power plant will be determined during the planning phase.

“This is a key project for strengthening the city’s vitality and attracting green industries. The extended reservation period reflects our commitment to supporting its advancement,”says Jouni Riihelä, Director of Urban Development for the City of Mikkeli.

Studies on the suitability of the area for solar power production began over a year ago.

“Completing the necessary feasibility studies during the reservation period is essential for us. Cooperation with the City of Mikkeli and Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd has been smooth and constructive throughout,” says Markus Ehrström, Project Development Director at Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy.

Mikkeli offers a number of sites well-suited for solar power generation. The national grid operated by Fingrid runs through the city, enabling efficient connection of solar power plants and other electricity-intensive activities. Several solar energy projects are being planned in Mikkeli by different operators. Another solar power plant is also being developed in the same area by OX2.
