Holiday homes play an important role in the tourism economy of the Mikkeli region. We develop leisure living and promote sustainable second home tourism to support year-round visitor activity, local services and long-term growth.

Developing leisure living in the Mikkeli region

Leisure living is a key driver of regional vitality in Mikkeli and South Savo. With more than 10,000 holiday homes, Mikkeli is the second largest second home destination in Finland. The wider Mikkeli region has nearly 30,000 holiday homes, and the total number in South Savo exceeds 46,000.

Second home ownership has a particularly strong impact in the region. More than 70% of holiday homes in the Mikkeli area and over 60% across South Savo are owned by people from outside the region.

Spending by second home residents contributes over €200 million annually to the regional economy, with more than €150 million generated in the Mikkeli area alone. In addition to their economic impact, second home residents play an important role in local communities and in sustaining services.

The Laiturilla brand brings together our work in developing sustainable leisure living

Laiturilla is the brand under which we develop leisure living in the Mikkeli region and South Savo. The name reflects a distinctive feature of Finnish second home culture: most holiday homes are located by the water, often on private waterfront plots with direct access to a pier.

Through the Laiturilla brand, we strengthen the region’s position as one of Finland’s leading areas for sustainable second home living. The brand also represents a centre of expertise built on long-term, responsible and well-planned development.

We promote sustainable second home living in close cooperation with partners across the region. Our goal is to ensure a strong and sustainable future for leisure living in Mikkeli and South Savo.
