Sustainable Industrial Waters – SIWat

The project will pilot the reuse of municipal and industrial wastewater in industry, reducing dependence on municipal drinking water. The pilot projects will develop methods and technologies that enable cost-effective water recycling that complies with the EU regulations.

The overall aim of the project is to pilot industrial reuse of municipal wastewater and industrial process water reducing reliance on municipal drinking water. We set up pilots in Estonia and Finland to develop methods, techniques and parameters for the recovery of municipal wastewater and industrial process water for industrial reuse. The pilots will test cost-effective and efficient recycling methods and technology applications that aligns with EU regulations. The benefits extend to authorities, infrastructure providers and SMEs reducing water costs and improving sustainability. The general public in BSR benefits from improved conditions forclean water availability and conservation of water sources.

Cross-border cooperation involves universities which monitor and analyse pilot plant operations. Insights into different water sources will be provided (ground- and surface water, municipal wastewater, industrial process water) and treatment methods ensuring robust and reproducible results.

This is a pioneering plan for the use of recycled water in industrial applications that can be exploited in BSR and across EU. The aim is to significantly increase water reuse in industry and free up ground and surface water for municipal use. The project will monitor and publish results in terms of both ecological and economic criteria. By promoting sustainable water management and fostering innovation we aim to create more sustainable and resource-efficient future.

MikseiMikkeli conducts the pilot tests in collaboration with the project partners. MikseiMikkeli will provide and analyse MBR process data for the SIWat project purposes. MikseiMikkeli has access to a modern data platform that combines data from different sources, which perfectly serves the data sharing needs of the project. The data platform combines data from the main treatment plant process (MBR) with the data received from the pilots in a useful format. MikseiMikkeli will organise together with the project partners trainings for employees of the water utilities, operators and potential end users, SMEs and other stakeholders involved in the project.

MikseiMikkeli will lead the work on a study on the EU and country specific regulatory constraints and limitations and perform a prefeasibility study and development of an investment plan on pilots. It will also lead the work on mapping the potential industries and end-users as well as a joint development of products and prototyping. MikseiMikkeli will be responsible for cooperation with the central BS region stakeholders. MikseiMikkeli will arrange international conferences and events as well as visits to the BEM Center of Excellence/ WWTP. MikseiMikkeli will share the results of the project with its international networks, such as Water Smart Territories (WST), CircInWater Eurocluster and Water4All partnership, where the Blue Economy Mikkeli Centre of Excellence is designated as Water Oriented Living Lab (WOLL).
