Sustainable growth for tourism in Mikkeli

The objective of tourism development is to build an attractive, year-round destination that benefits the entire Saimaa region. Through development projects, new products and services are created, accessibility is improved, international visibility is strengthened, and tourism-related business increases across South Savo.

We develop tourism in the Saimaa region through collaboration

We work in close cooperation at both regional and interregional levels within the Lakeland and Saimaa networks to strengthen tourism across the area. In international tourism development and marketing in particular, scale matters – on our own, we are too small to compete effectively in global markets. Our partners include Savonlinna, Varkaus, Imatra and Lappeenranta.

Our ambition is to position the Saimaa region among the three leading tourism destinations in Finland, alongside the Helsinki metropolitan area and Lapland.

We aim to grow tourism in a structured and sustainable way, building on the region’s authentic strengths and respecting its cultural heritage, as part of the wider international Saimaa destination.

In international markets, our brand is VisitLakeSaimaa – Lakeland Finland. Our key themes focus on lake nature and local food culture.

Tourism growth is driven by development programs

A significant share of our work to increase the region’s visibility and attractiveness is delivered through EU-funded development programmes.

Through these programmes, we strengthen the region’s international profile, advance sustainable tourism, improve both physical and digital accessibility to destinations, develop products based on local history and cultural heritage, promote food tourism, and support the sustainable development of second-home living.
