Mikkeli, Finland is set to receive numerous green transition investments, with a total value in the billions. There is still ample space and grid capacity available for new companies
Several solar power parks, data centers, and electricitystorage facilities are under planning in Mikkeli. The solar power plants are primarily located on land freed from peat production, while battery storage facilities and data centers have secured locations within Mikkeli’s extensive industrial land areas.
The value of the ongoing investment plans in total is in the billions of euros.
The investments are backed by solid analysis, including the identification of competitive advantages and proactive research to find the information companies will need. For example, the decision-making process regarding the locations of solar power plants is based on a 2023 study that identified potential sites in Mikkeli.
According to this study, the region offers nearly 1,000 megawatts of solar power construction potential.
“The study was a catalyst that immediately sparked significant interest among solar energy companies,” says Jussi Heinimö, Director of Investment Promotion at Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd.
One of Mikkeli’s key strengths is the 400-kilovolt main grid running through the city. A local substation enables new operators to connect to the grid, which is operated by national transmission system operator Fingrid.
Currently, the main grid capacity available in the Mikkeli region is several hundreds of megawatts. Additionally, Fingrid is committed to developing the main grid to meet customer needs. The company is already preparing investments to increase the number of customer connection points in Mikkeli.
– Fingrid substation in Mikkeli has a vast connection capacity available. Moreover, it has great development potential for large-scale power consumers as well, confirms Jarno Sederlund, Customer Manager at Fingrid.
The availability of industrial plots further enhance Mikkeli’s attractiveness for investments. As a geographically extensive city Mikkeli owns large land areas and is actively zoning new plots for industrial use particularly for green energy projects.
The City of Mikkeli, Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd, electricity grid operators, and permit authorities are working in close cooperation to make investing in Mikkeli seamless. A shared vision, extensive expertise, and thorough preparation make up an operating model that enables serving interested companies flexibly and provide tailored solutions to meet their specific needs.
One company currently preparing a solar power investment in Mikkeli is Solinvest Oy.
“Effective cooperation with all stakeholders in Mikkeli makes it easy for us to develop our business,” says Miika Korsman, Managing Director at Solinvest.
Finland is regarded as a stable and secure investment environment in general. Following the country’s NATO membership, the City of Mikkeli has been chosen as the location for NATO Multi Corps Land Component Command.
