Developing Sustainable Tourism
The objective of the Developing Sustainable Tourism project is to elevate the Mikkeli region to become one of the leading areas for responsible tourism in the Saimaa region and to obtain regional Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) status. Furthermore, the aim is to promote best practices and values of responsible tourism among local businesses as well as to safeguard the continuity, resilience, and economic sustainability of tourism enterprises. Through this project the importance of sustainable tourism will be communicated both regionally and from a business perspective strengthening the responsible and environmentally friendly image of the Mikkeli region and enhancing its competitiveness as a tourism destination.
To achieve these objectives, the project implementation is divided into three work packages:
1. Sustainable sales promotion and networking
The goal is to create a shared digital marketplace for businesses that brings together tourism services in the Mikkeli region, makes it easier for visitors to find services, and promotes sustainable sales.
2. Promoting sustainable tourism, the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label
The aim is to encourage businesses to join Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland program or to apply for an environmental certification suitable for them. The STF label helps businesses, among other things, to improve their environmental friendliness and social responsibility.
3. Developing sustainable business operations
The goal is to support tourism businesses in the Mikkeli region in developing sustainable and resilient business operations, ensuring continuity, and committing to the principles of sustainable development.
