DemoMelu – Biochar as a building material

In Mikkeli, long-term work has been done to find new uses for biochar. One potential use for biochar is in concrete construction.

The DemoMelu -project consists of a parallel DemoMelu R&D project by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences and Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd, and a DemoMelu investment project by the City of Mikkeli. The aim of the project is to develop new industrial bio-char-based concrete product concepts and options through laboratory and pilot-scale experiments. In addition, the project will develop and demonstrate a novel climate- and energy-efficient, replicable solution for noise barrier construction. The noise barrier will be built using 3D-printing and bio-charr concrete.
