BEM Centre of Excellence III
The BEM Centre of Excellence III project implements the Innovation Ecosystem Agreement between the City of Mikkeli and the State. The project contributes to the EU and Finnish government's themes of green transition and digitalisation at regional level in South-Savo.
The project coordinates the activities and development of the Blue Economy Mikkeli (BEM) centre of excellence. It will strengthen BEM’s position and visibility as a centre of water expertise both nationally and internationally. The project will create a new operating environment and cooperation network for the needs of business, RDI and education in the water sector, especially in the circular economy of water. The project will take BEM to the next level by exploiting the unique RDI environment being built within the city’s new wastewater treatment plant. The project will invest in marketing and communication of BEM and further develop services for water technology and water management sectors, especially businesses.
The goal of Blue Economy Mikkeli is to become Finland’s most renowned and internationally significant water sector hub, developing new solutions to water management challenges both domestically and abroad. The project’s main implementer is the City of Mikkeli, carried out in cooperation with Mikkeli Development Miksei Ltd. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Mikkeli Regional Committee. The authority granting the EU funding is the Regional Council of South Savo.
The total project funding amounts to €559,339, with the EU contribution totaling €335,604.
The project is led by BEM Coordinator Juha Kauppinen — contact details available here.
