Why travel matters in Mikkeli – driving growth across the region

Travel and second home living are key pillars of vitality in Mikkeli. Our work supports the growth of travel businesses and strengthens the appeal of the Lake Saimaa region. We are also responsible for the city’s tourist information services.

Travel generates over €100 million in annual revenue for the region and contributes to employment across multiple sectors.

The impact of travel on regional vitality

Together with the city, local businesses, and partners, we promote Mikkeli as an attractive travel destination and help local travel businesses grow. We are also responsible for the city’s tourist information services.

Travel has enormous growth potential and is a significant employer. In South Savo 5.3% of the workforce is employed in travel related sectors – the fifth-highest share in Finland. The industry also has notable spillover effects on other sectors such as retail and construction. On average, one euro spent on travel generates 60 cents for other industries.

The total economic impact of travel in the region exceeds €112 million per year, with direct travel related income accounting for over €85 million.

We actively promote Mikkeli’s role as a leading area for second home living. Mikkeli and the South Savo region are among Finland’s most attractive destinations for second homes. Here the number of second homes equals the number of permanent residences. In 2019, second home residents made up 42% of the local housing population.

People spending time in more than 10,000 second homes bring over €50 million in annual income to the city of Mikkeli.
